A. — Subst. fém. sing. Race de gallinacés dont la poule est excellente pondeuse. On a particulièrement étudié le dimorphisme sexuel chez les gallinacés, où il est extrêmement net, du moins dans la plupart des races, la leghorn par exemple. Le coq a une belle crête rouge, de longs ergots, un plumage brillamment coloré et d'un type spécial; la poule a une petite crête pâle, des ergots rudimentaires, un plumage terne (CUÉNOT, J. ROSTAND, Introd. gén., 1936, p. 40).
— Emploi appos. Les fermes modèles du Surrey où picorent les grasses et blanches volailles leghorn (MORAND, Londres, 1933, p. 222).
B. — Subst. masc. ou fém., p. ext. Animal de cette race. La cour était toujours émaillée de ses poules blanches et de ses leghorns aux cous d'ancêtres nus et fripés (VIALAR, Homme de chasse, 1961, p. 102).

Leghorn de la ville d'Italie Livourne d'où cette race de poules aurait été amenée aux États-Unis (FEW t. 18, p. 78b).
